I’m very proud to introduce the Salt Spring Early Learning Centre, and our early childhood educators and staff.
We are working as a community on a philosophy unique to our early learning centre. You will see that on our website as soon as we complete it. That philosophy will be based on what we have followed for many years – the Reggio philosophy of early childhood education. The “Reggio” method emphasizes student-led inquiry over teacher-imposed detailed curriculum, and harnesses the young child’s intrinsic curiosity. Families interested in learning more about Reggio should have a look at the website of the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre.
You will often hear us repeat the three themes that serve as the foundation of who we are and what we do: quality, setting and history.
- Quality: our certified ECEs (early childhood educators) teach children aged 2½ to 6, in accordance with the best training and research. Remember: this isn’t “daycare” any longer, it’s authentic early childhood education. Our ECEs and our programs combine to create rich educational environments for your child.
- Setting: our beautiful building sits in a wooded, natural environment, and next to our huge play area. In August, 2015, we completed our first hobbit playhouse, which will become a part of our hobbit-village playground!
- History: we have provided early childhood education to our community’s families for 37 years. The Centre began operation in 1978, and was formally incorporated under the British Columbia Society Act in 1983. We have been fortunate to have some of our past “graduates” come back as parents and volunteers!
I am available to answer any questions that our families may have. For families who are considering joining us, please call me, and I would be pleased to arrange a tour, so you could meet our teachers and see our glorious centre.
