“Learning through play and discovery”
Salt Spring Early Learning Centre is an early learning centre operated by the non-profit charity Gulf Islands Early Learning Society, and licensed under the Community Care and Assisted Living Act and the Child Care Licencing Regulation.
Since 1978, we have provided quality early learning (not “daycare”, with its child-minding vibe, but authentic early learning delivered by certified early learning educators) to Salt Spring Island children aged 2½ to 6. At our gorgeous, restored century-home on Drake Road, we believe in learning through research-supported education based upon play and discovery. We accept each child as an individual. We provide a stimulating and creative environment where children are encouraged to develop their social, emotional, intellectual and physical skills.
In providing service to our community’s families, Salt Spring Early Learning Centre emphasizes three themes: quality, setting and history.
- Quality: our certified ECEs (early childhood educators) teach children aged 2½ to 6, in accordance with the best training and research. Remember: this isn’t “daycare” any longer, it’s authentic early childhood education. Our ECEs and programs combine to create educationally influenced environments along with inspired activities.
- Setting: our beautiful building sits in a wooded, natural environment, and next to our huge play area. In August, 2015, we completed our first hobbit playhouse, which will become a part of our hobbit inspired playground!
- History: we have provided early childhood education to our community’s families for 38 years. The Centre began operation in 1978, and was formally incorporated under the British Columbia Society Act in 1983. We have been fortunate to have some of our past “graduates” come back as parents and volunteers!
